In Mumbai, engineers from the BMC road department who were issued notices for delays in addressing pothole complaints have provided their explanations. They mentioned that certain roads were not under their jurisdiction but belonged to other agencies. Additionally, in some instances, contractors responsible for road projects had not completed repair work, leading the engineers to arrange for repairs with their own contractors. The engineers cited being preoccupied with preparations for the Prime Minister's visit as a reason for the delays. The BMC administration has cautioned the engineers to promptly address potholes to avoid further notices and potential disciplinary actions. Initially, 23 road department engineers received show-cause notices for the delayed response to pothole issues. The BMC also appointed 227 sub-engineers, each assigned to monitor a 9km network. Show-cause letters were issued to sub-engineers questioning why no action should be taken against them for delays in addressing potholes. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Engineers' Union had appealed to the BMC chief to support staff morale and reconsider punitive measures. The union highlighted that engineers dedicate long hours, including weekends, and suggested implementing two shifts to manage the workload efficiently. They also proposed a meeting to discuss and overcome the challenges faced by the engineers, noting the ongoing Metro construction requiring road maintenance by the contractors authorized under issued NOCs.
